Secondary School Pairs delivers big time
The youth bowls scene is poppin’ and jumping off the weekend’s St George National Under 26 Pairs, Tuesday’s Secondary School Pairs was another big proof point.
More than 200 students from 22 secondary schools were in action across two venues, with Championship play at Remuera and Development at Mt Eden. Two grades, busy greens, and a whole lot of energy – this was rangatahi bowls at its best.
But this event didn’t happen in isolation.
Bowls Auckland CEO Dean Bartlett commented on the rising youth participation: “It’s the result of concentrated mahi in the rangatahi space, creating more ways than ever for young people to get involved – whether that’s in-school sessions, after-school hubs, or stepping up into competition play.” He added, “It was exciting to be right in the middle of the action at Mt Eden and see first-hand how these students are grabbing the chance to play bowls.”
From Have-A-Go days and NCEA pathways to club connections and record-breaking event entries, the momentum is real. Schools are leaning in, clubs are opening their doors, and students are saying “yes” to bowls in growing numbers.
A key part of the event’s success is the ongoing connection between schools and this accessible sport, strengthened by Bowls Auckland’s partnership with College Sport Auckland, who helped streamline entries and boost interest.
And if you’re wondering how schools can get involved, check out this clip. School Engagement Lead Hannah Neville shares exactly that – highlighting just how easy it is to connect in and get started.
With fast, fun bowls, plenty of laughs, and great vibes across the day, the Secondary School Pairs has become a highlight on the school sports calendar – and a clear sign events like this are an amazing launching pad for the next generation of bowlers.
