Weekend matchups to watch in the Pairs
23 May 2025

Fresh off a thrilling Singles, the excitement continues this weekend with the Pairs in the Shade Systems Champ of Champs series—and if last week was anything to go by, who knows what will happen! Both draws are packed with top talent, from past champions to red-hot newcomers.

Men’s Pairs preview

Across Royal Oak and Remuera, the men’s competition is stacked.

  • Young guns Liam Hill and David Motu (Auckland BC) are riding a wave of momentum and enter as favourites. They’re joined in the top half of the draw at Royal Oak by home hopefuls Danny Delany and Kevin Dixon, who face a tough first-round clash against Oceania Champions Peni Panapa and Pale Luka (Papatoetoe). That’s your morning match to watch.
  • Over at Remuera, look out for Dean Edge and Paul Davison (St Heliers) open against 2020 winners and Centre Pairs champions in 2022-23, Billy Fulton and Tony Garelja (Henderson).
  • Defending champ Chris Lowe returns with new partner Jackson Haynes, a recent Northland transfer is already s making waves in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Women’s Pairs preview

While this is a more compact-sized field, it’s fiercely competitive nonetheless:

  • Rima Strickland & Nicole Singer, two-time Centre Pairs champions, face the in-form Claire Orr & Dana Taylor (Howick)—fresh off a 1-5 Triples win.
  • Agnes Motu, last year’s champion with Lesley McLinden (Bridge Park), returns with a new partner—none other than recent singles champ Lisa Prideaux. They slot into the top side of the draw and bring serious firepower.

With so many tight matchups, picking a clear standout will be tough—every rink is a potential thriller.
