Season Opener: 1-5 Fours
10 September 2025

The new season kicks off this weekend with the 1–5 Year Fours, and the draw has delivered a spread of teams that promises plenty of competitive spirit. With 30 teams entered, this event continues to draw strong numbers while showcasing Auckland’s emerging bowlers.

The field features a blend of established combinations and brand-new outfits. Clubs such as Howick, Mt Albert, and Royal Oak have multiple teams, highlighting the depth of their 1-5 programmes. Meanwhile, East Tāmaki, Maraetai, Glendowie, and Mt Wellington join the fray as new contributors, reflecting the growth of 1-5 membership across the region.

The opening round serves up an intriguing clash, with David Weir’s Howick four facing a strong Bridge Park team skipped by Fraema Akaruru-Teinaki. Both teams will back themselves to secure three wins from four rounds and book a post-section spot; however, one will have to do it the hard way, recovering from a first-round loss.

For Steve Fisher (Royal Oak), the Fours remains a title that has eluded him. With a favourable qualifying draw on home turf, his team will see this as a prime chance to finally break through. Another name to watch is Hannah Dawson (Howick), stepping up to skip the defending champions after Clinton Smith aged out of eligibility. Also in contention is Mike Burns’ Royal Oak quartet, bolstered by the return of Peadar Macelvanna alongside representatives Rebecca Brosnan and Mike Faircloth.

A hallmark of the Fours, particularly at the 1–5 level, is the balance of experience and development within each team. Many line-ups feature players who’ve already made their mark in singles or pairs, now guiding newer teammates through the complexities of the format. This dynamic makes for unpredictable contests and often sparks breakout performances.

The 1–5 Year programme continues to shine a light on the future of bowls in Auckland, and this event is no exception. Be sure to head along to Remuera Bowling Club on Sunday afternoon to catch the final rounds and see who will lift the first title of the season.

Good luck to everyone playing this weekend.
