A rainy Thursday didn’t dampen the spirits of 30 students from Central Auckland Special School (CASS) as they took over New Lynn Bowling Club for their March 2026 All Abilities Day. This marked the third time in just nine months that this group of students, with diverse abilities, came together to put their newly learned skills to the test in a friendly and supportive competition.
Bowls Auckland has been delivering in-school coaching and taster sessions for CASS students, fostering impressive growth in both skill and confidence. While in-school sessions make bowls accessible, practising on a real green is a whole different experience, and in the weeks leading up to tournament day, students eagerly expressed their excitement to get on a proper green.
From the moment they arrived, students were ready to roll. The day featured a mix of seasoned players, some with three terms of experience, and newcomers who had only tried bowls once. The more experienced students naturally stepped into leadership roles, guiding and encouraging their peers.
Friendship, teamwork, and a sense of belonging were at the heart of the day. Setayesh from Lynfield College shared, “I really enjoyed making new friends,” while Iverson from St Peter’s said, “We were treated like a team!” David, also from St Peter’s, summed it up beautifully: “Thank you for making us feel like we belong and are welcome… You made us feel like we can do anything.”
The day was more than just a tournament; it was a celebration of inclusion, learning, and the joy of playing together.
