Michael Irwin Bradshaw
30 May 1955 – 24 December 2025
Yesterday, we farewelled one of Auckland’s true characters of the bowls community, Michael Irwin Bradshaw.
Raised in Ellerslie, Mike grew up surrounded by the stories and experiences that shaped his straight-up, no-nonsense approach to life. His sister Gill has shared many fond and humorous memories from those early years: reminders that Mike’s character was evident from a young age.
Mike built a long and hardworking career as a trade roofer, a profession that reflected his practical skills, resilience, and strong work ethic. He took pride in the work he did and the life he built.
His true passion, however, was lawn bowls. If he wasn’t playing, he was watching, and if it wasn’t bowls, it was darts, snooker, or a good CSI investigation on television.
Over more than 30 years in the sport, including time as an Auckland representative, Michael’s achievements were exceptional:
- Over 50 club titles
- Nine Centre titles
- National titles including runner-up in Pairs and Fours
- NZ Open 2010 – Pairs Champion
- NZ Open 2010 – Running Singles Champion
These accolades speak not only to his talent, but to his dedication, competitiveness, and deep love for the game.
Mike was the longtime partner of fellow bowler Agnes Motu, becoming part of her wider whānau and sharing in many gatherings filled with conversation, laughter, and the occasional Lion Red! Their partnership was built on love, respect, honesty, and plenty of spirited debate, both on and off the bowling green.
He was also a mentor to many, including David Motu, supporting him from toddler years through to becoming a capable and caring young man. Their time together in cars, on planes, at clubs, and on the green was filled with encouragement, banter, and lessons that will live on.
Mike lived a life grounded in simple joys, strong relationships, and genuine passion. He would want to be remembered not only with tears, but with stories, smiles, and laughter.
Thank you, Michael Irwin Bradshaw. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
