Rangatahi connections growing strong

Our Rangatahi strategy is coming to life in a big way, with school–club connections stronger than ever. This term has seen a real shift; not only is Bowls Auckland supporting introductions, but schools and clubs are increasingly reaching out to each other to create opportunities for young people to get involved.

In-school sessions across Terms 1 and 4 are proving hugely popular, whether through relaxed lunchtime Have-A-Go activities or structured PE-based introductions. We’re also seeing growing uptake of bowls as a Level 3 NCEA Physical Education assessment option, with Howick College and Epsom Girls Grammar already on board and a tailored lesson framework currently being developed to support student success.

So far this season, more than 2,000 students have taken part, and the feedback has been fantastic. Students are asking to stay on after sessions and wanting to know how they can keep playing and improve – a clear sign that perceptions of bowls are changing within school communities.

Next week marks another step forward with after-school hubs launching at New Lynn and West End. These provide a pathway for rangatahi to build skills, confidence and club connections, and lead into our always-popular Secondary School Pairs Day on 24 March, featuring both championship and development grades. Entries are via school Sports Co-ordinators through College Sport.

Clubs keen to become a Rangatahi hub are warmly encouraged to get involved.
