Best of luck to all Tāmaki Makaurau teams

This weekend, 12 wāhine (women) and 10 tāne (men) teams from Tāmaki Makaurau will embark on a journey to the Thames Valley for the 50th edition of the Aotearoa National Bowls tournament.

Spread across five clubs, including Thames, Thames Coast, Kerepehi, Paeroa, and Hauraki, this unique event blends fierce competition and warm hospitality, embodying Māori culture, family, inclusion, and community spirit.

Among the notable participants are the Blucher Family, with father Peter, daughter Mackenzie and son Adam (pictured) all three leading their respective teams. Keep an eye on Adam’s team!

Another youthful combination to watch out for are members of the formidable Hill Family – led by Liam Hill, with cousin Ryan Hill at two they join forces with the talented Kaylin Huywler (NZ Māori Oceania Singles Champion).

Played over Waitangi Weekend, there is an opening Pōwhiri (welcome) followed by Hākari (feast) at Matai Whetu marae on Friday evening. The competition unfolds with five rounds of play on Saturday, interspersed with delightful kai and evening entertainment. Sunday brings further competition, leading to the eagerly anticipated semi-finals and finals at 2:00 pm, broadcast live on Bowls New Zealand’s YouTube channel. The tournament culminates with a traditional Hangi.

Monday morning sees a heartfelt Poroporoaki (farewell) over breakfast, marking the end of a weekend filled with camaraderie, great memories, and, hopefully, impressive results on the greens.

Best of luck to all Tāmaki Makaurau teams – may your bowls find their mark!
