Auckland 1–5 Singles full of talent & spirit
18 February 2026

The promise of an open, unpredictable championship, highlighted in our event preview, became reality at the Auckland 1–5 Year Singles, with fresh contenders stepping forward and established names pushed all the way.

Across two days of high-quality singles play, competitors showed impressive tactical awareness, shot execution and composure under pressure. Close heads and confident match management featured from section play through to the finals, underlining the depth developing across our region.

One of the true highlights of the weekend was the visible energy and camaraderie on display. Clubs turned out in force to support their players, creating a vibrant and encouraging atmosphere across the greens. It was especially exciting to see strong representation from clubs who have not traditionally entered events. A special mention must go to Maraetai, who made an incredible run to the semifinals. Not only did they impress with their performance, but they also stood out with their sharp uniforms and unified team presence – a fantastic example of pride in club and competition.

In the women’s event, defending champion Penny Yam’s campaign ended in the semifinals against Tracey Brayshaw (Pt Chevalier). Brayshaw advanced to face fellow 1–5 rep Donna Davison (St Heliers), who produced a composed performance to secure the title 21–17.

The men’s draw delivered its own drama. Maraetai’s Ross Peden impressed on his way to the semifinals before falling to Sam Brack (Mt Wellington), while Mt Eden’s Stephen Thom edged out Fraema Akaururu-Teinaki 21–20 in a thrilling contest. Brack carried that momentum into the final, claiming the championship 21–16.

Congratulations to all competitors, and especially to our 2026 champions Donna Davison and Sam Brack. The event once again highlighted the strength of Auckland’s development pathway, with the 1–5 grade providing a platform for new names to emerge.

A sincere thank you to our umpires for their consistency and support across both days. To our host clubs, volunteers, markers and organisers – your tireless work, from logistics to player support, ensured a seamless and welcoming championship.

The Auckland 1–5 Year Singles is more than a title event; it is a celebration of development, opportunity and the next generation of our sport. The future of bowls in our region is in very good hands.
