First Season Titles on the Line!
5 November 2026

The bowls season is officially underway, and this weekend, 7-8 November, the spotlight shifts to two of Auckland’s centre championships as the Men’s Fours and Women’s Singles bring another exciting weekend of competitive bowls to greens across the region.

With centre titles and plenty of club pride on the line, players will be looking to make their mark as the race for silverware heats up.

Men’s Fours – Teamwork Takes Centre Stage

Four players, eight bowls and one shared ambition: becoming Auckland champions!

The Men’s Fours promises a fascinating contest, with several powerhouse combinations and some intriguing section play matchups that could prove decisive in the race for qualification.

Sections 2 and 9 look particularly stacked, with quality combinations making it difficult to identify a clear favourite. Meanwhile, Sections 3 and 7 feature standout head-to-head clashes that alone could be worth a trip to the sidelines.

With just 10 teams advancing to Sunday’s post-section play, there is little room for error. Every end, every shot and every result could have a significant bearing on who progresses.

With so many exciting matchups across the draw, Saturday’s section play promises plenty of drama well before the knockout stages begin.

Women’s Singles – No Place to Hide!

One player, four bowls and the ultimate test of individual skill.

This year’s Women’s Singles presents a fascinating field, with several familiar singles specialists absent, including Kimberley Hemingway and Lisa Prideaux, potentially opening the door for a new name to emerge.

One player determined to make her mark will be defending champion Hannah Dawson, who faces a challenging Section 9, including her premier teammate Tia Moka. It’s a section that promises some fiercely contested encounters, with no easy path to qualification.

Another name to watch is Fiona Mancer, who arrives in Auckland from Manawatū with an impressive pedigree. Mancer will be among the favourites and takes her place in Section 8 at Royal Oak, adding another layer of interest to the competition.

Elsewhere, Estelle Hickey, Lesley McLinden, Aggie Motu and Wendy Jensen bring a wealth of experience at the highest levels of singles competition. All are more than capable of mounting a serious challenge for the title.

The Road to Championship Glory

Saturday’s section play will see players and teams battle for qualification, with only section winners advancing to the knockout stages.

By Sunday, the equation becomes simple: win and advance, lose and your championship hopes are over.

This season also introduces a change to the post-section process. Rather than a random redraw, qualifiers will progress into a predetermined bracket based on their section numbers, with the lowest-numbered sections receiving any first-round byes.

The change provides a clearer pathway through the knockout stages, with players able to identify their potential route to the final as the qualifiers emerge.

Who Will Rise to the Occasion?

Two disciplines, two Auckland titles and a weekend packed with opportunity.

Whether it’s the fours combination that finds its rhythm at just the right time or the singles player who holds their nerve when the pressure is greatest, there will be no shortage of stories to follow.

With the first centre titles of the season up for grabs, expect big bowls, tight finishes and a few surprises along the way.

Be sure to head down to Mt Eden Bowls Club and catch the action as Auckland’s first champions of the season are crowned!
