Bowls has always evolved. Formats have changed, greens and equipment have changed and the way people spend their time, join clubs and experience sport has changed too.
Moving forward doesn’t mean leaving our traditions behind. It means understanding what makes bowls special, protecting that and being prepared to evolve the things that no longer best serve the game.
Keep the Game Rolling
Keep the Game Rolling is Bowls Auckland’s commitment to ensuring bowls continues to evolve, connect and thrive at every level of the game.
Aligned with our refreshed Strategic Plan, it reflects our focus on Product: the game itself and Community: our clubs and the people within them.
For the 2026-27 season, this vision is being brought to life through changes to the way Bowls Auckland events are played and delivered.
The focus is on more meaningful play, faster and more fluid games, less dead time, clearer and more consistent Conditions of Play, welcoming environments and being open to innovation.
Shaped by Players and Clubs
The changes have been informed by ongoing feedback from players and clubs, including player surveys, club delegate forums and discussions with Bowls New Zealand and other centres.
Pleasingly, overall player satisfaction continues to rise. Players ranked their overall experience at 3.82 out of 5, with communication rated at 3.92 out of 5. Feedback has also highlighted the importance of consistent Conditions of Play, appropriate playing timeframes and reducing games that have little or no bearing on the outcome.
At the same time, Centre events are only part of the wider bowls picture. Clubs also need space for their own championships, tournaments, social bowls and the activities that support their members and communities.
Our aim is to deliver meaningful Centre events that complement club calendars, make good use of players’ time and provide greater certainty around when events will finish.
What’s Changing?
Restricting Movement
Skips may only visit the head after their penultimate bowl (second-to-last bowl). Both skips must be back at the mat end before either skip delivers their first bowl. This reduces unnecessary movement and delays, helping create a better pace and rhythm of play.
Re-spotting Jacks on Killed Ends
Killed jacks will be re-spotted rather than replaying the end, across all Bowls Auckland events.
This was trialled in non-pathway events last season and received positive feedback. It will now be applied across all events for greater consistency and clarity.
Time Limits
Time limits will be used across events, with additional playing time available in some finals only.
This encourages a positive pace of play while providing greater certainty for players, clubs and event scheduling.
Section Winners
Formats will favour section winners or clearly defined qualifying positions. This includes Centre Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours, where section winners will advance.
The move to section winners means 25% of the field will progress, providing a clear and consistent pathway through an event. It also gives greater certainty that events can be completed within an appropriate timeframe, reduces pressure on club calendars and allows events to grow in participation over time.
Music & Atmosphere
Host clubs are encouraged to create welcoming off-green environments through appropriate music, food options and a positive event atmosphere.
The aim is to make Centre events enjoyable not just for players, but for supporters, families and the wider community.
Give It a Go
We know that not everyone will agree with every change, and that’s okay. Some changes will take a little time to get used to. What matters is that we keep listening and learning – and importantly, keep improving!
We’ll monitor the changes throughout the 2026-27 season and seek further feedback through our post-season consultation process.
