Winterclub got off to a flying start, with several teams making an early statement across the opening two rounds. The St Heliers Sinners set the pace in Section Four, finishing week one at the top of the standings with a perfect four rink points and an impressive differential of +67. Section Two also produced several strong performances, with Carlton Cornwall Tui (+40), the Howick Nurse Sharks (+39) and the MABC Lions (+34) all securing the maximum four rink points.

The Howick Hammerheads demonstrated their scoring power, with Team A going off the scoreboard in both rounds. They opened with a dominant 52–9 victory over Point Chevalier before defeating Maraetai 50–11 in round two. Maraetai, however, had the final laugh. Their B Team recorded a hard-fought 25–22 win over the Hammerheads, preventing Howick from building what could have been a commanding lead after the opening day.

Section Two has the potential to remain tightly contested in week two, with none of the current top three scheduled to face one another. While the leaders will be looking to continue their momentum, several teams will be seeking redemption and the opportunity to collect valuable rink points. Section One also remains wide open. With twelve teams competing, qualification may prove slightly more challenging, but every side still has the same opportunity across the six rounds. Four teams finished the opening day on three rink points, while Pringle Park Thunder hold a narrow advantage at the top with 3.5. Sections three and four have finished more evenly balanced after week one; however, following week two, we expect to see a clearer picture leading into the final qualification opportunity.

Week two not only sees a change of scenery with a group of new hosts but also welcomes a new club for the Bowls Auckland Interclub competitions, with play heading to the eastern coastline of Maraetai. In addition to entering a Bowls Auckland interclub for the first time in as many members can recall, (Having been active in the COC Series the past two seasons), it also serves as the first time the club will host a Bowls Auckland event. Maraetai’s involvement represents an important milestone for the club as it continues rebuilding its membership and strengthening its participation in the wider bowls community.

It is fantastic to see smaller and more geographically isolated clubs playing an active role in delivering Bowls Auckland competitions. Hosting provides Maraetai with an opportunity to showcase its club, its hospitality and its stunning coastal setting, while creating further opportunities for growth and connection.

With the standings still tight and plenty of rink points available, another exciting weekend of Winterclub action awaits.
