Bowls Auckland was excited to take part in the Halberg Games 2026 last weekend, a major three-day national sporting festival for physically disabled and visually impaired young people aged 8–21.
Although the weather meant the event concluded after two days, the spirit and enthusiasm of the 250+ participants from across Aotearoa remained unwavering. The Games once again showcased the power of sport to connect, inspire, and create opportunities for all young people to participate and enjoy movement in a safe, welcoming environment.
As part of the weekend’s activities, Bowls Auckland delivered a taster session on Saturday afternoon for participants and their whānau. Using the highly inclusive Rookie Roller sets, attendees were able to experience the game in an accessible and engaging way. The equipment, featuring ramps, extendable arms, and soft bowls, ensured everyone could take part comfortably, with the focus firmly on enjoyment and participation.
Ahead of the event, coaches and volunteers also benefited from free inclusivity training provided by the Halberg Foundation. This valuable session strengthened understanding across all sports involved and reinforced the importance of continually removing barriers to participation.
We look forward to supporting the Games again in 2027.
