Jack’s claim first Jack’s vs Kitty’s challenge
4 December 2025

The inaugural Jacks vs Kittys Challenge unfolded at Royal Oak on Wednesday night, marking the first time the representative squads have come together for this unique new internal fixture. Designed as a valuable tune-up ahead of this weekend’s Battle of the Bridge, the event delivered competitive bowls, standout performances, and plenty of insights as both squads tested combinations and match readiness.

Round 1 – Pairs and Fours
The challenge opened with a blend of pairs and fours across nine rinks, where the Jacks struck early. Securing six of the nine rink points, they established a strong platform, though every game remained tightly contested. The men showed composure under time pressure, pulling ahead in the closing ends.

The Kittys made the most of their opportunities, with Rebecca Brosnan and Philly Akaruru producing a late three to swing their match after a sporting gesture from Peni Panapa, who sprinted to deliver the jack in the dying seconds, allowing the final end to be played.

Round 2 – Singles Shootout
A fast-paced 40-minute singles round heightened the intensity across the green. The Jacks again took control, claiming eight of nine matches. The Kitty’s one singles win came from second-year Sacha Collins, who has proven to be a natural singles expert, holding off Simon Gao, who was fighting back after a rough start.

Final result
Across both rounds, the Jacks finished with a comprehensive victory: Jacks (Men): 14 points and Kittys (Women): 4 points.

 Looking ahead
Beyond the scoreboard, the evening achieved its purpose: providing a quality hit-out ahead of the Battle of the Bridge. Both squads gained valuable rhythm, tested new pairings, and built momentum.

A big thank you to Royal Oak for hosting and to all players and supporters who contributed to a successful debut. With the Challenge now launched, it promises to grow into a regular and eagerly anticipated fixture on the calendar.
