The Molecheck Women’s Open Singles wrapped up in style over the weekend, delivering a showcase of talent, determination, and thrilling bowls action. With three major events, it was an action-packed weekend both on and off the green.
Things kicked off on Friday evening with a special masterclass from Blackjack and world champion Tayla Bruce. Fifty keen bowlers tested themselves in a series of skills challenges before heading indoors for a Q&A audience with the champ — the perfect curtain-raiser for the weekend ahead.
In the main event, Lisa White of Raumati continued her stunning run of indoor form, claiming yet another accolade to add to her growing list of achievements. White’s remarkable streak saw her secure the title, making it her third major singles victory in as many months. Her consistency, composure, and precision under pressure once again proved the difference as she powered her way to victory.
For the second consecutive year, Kimberley Hemingway showcased her class and resilience by reaching the final. Despite pushing hard and delivering one hell of a performance in the final match, Hemingway had to settle for runner-up once more. Her back-to-back finals appearances confirm her place among Auckland’s very best.
The Plate competition provided plenty of drama too, with Auckland legend Linda Ralph taking top honours. Renowned for her experience and calm, composed approach, Ralph overcame St Heliers’ Jane Field in the final, adding another highlight to her distinguished career.
The weekend was rounded out in fitting style with the launch of the Bowls Auckland Foundation. Guest speakers Kevin Hickland, Raelene Castle, and Courtney Tairi captivated the crowd, while a touching moment unfolded with the awarding of life membership to Mike Galloway, celebrated alongside his proud family and clubmates.
This year’s event not only crowned champions but also underlined the depth of talent in women’s bowls. From seasoned champions to rising stars, the competition produced countless thrilling matches and a wonderful display of skill. With performances of this calibre, the future of the women’s game is in fantastic health, and the event looks set to go from strength to strength.
Events like this are only possible with support, and we extend our sincere thanks to our partner Molecheck for backing bowls in Auckland and supporting Tayla Bruce’s masterclass. A massive thank you also goes to Royal Oak and the Rockets for their tireless work across the weekend, and to our host clubs, volunteers, markers, and umpires who ensured the competition ran seamlessly. Thanks also to Villa Maria for supplying wine at the luncheon.
What a way to open the 2025/26 season — and a sign of big things to come!
