Champ of Champs Singles Launches 2025 Shade Systems Series
15 May 2025

The opening event in this season’s Shade Systems series is here, and few titles carry as much prestige as the Champion of Champions Singles. With 26 clubs represented in the Men’s field and 21 in the Women’s, this year also marks the welcome return of Waiheke Bowling Club, who have rejoined the series after reviving their club championships.

A compelling mix of champions in Men’s event

The Men’s competition features a compelling mix of proven champions and rising contenders. Defending champion Mike Galloway (Royal Oak) leads the bottom half of the draw and is joined by strong challengers Adam Blucher (Te Atatū) and Steve Campbell (Howick)—both of whom have been on the cusp of a breakthrough in recent years. A standout first-round match will see Campbell face Patrick Stanaway (Carlton Cornwall)—a must-watch clash.

The top half of the draw looks wide open. Experienced campaigners Tere Brunton (Pakuranga), Darryl Gordon (Auckland), and Phil Taylor (Bridge Park) are all in the mix, but watch out for Charles Gray (St Heliers). A quiet achiever in his junior years, Gray comes into form as he finishes his fifth year and could surprise the favourites.

Serious contenders in the Women’s field

Defending champion Lisa Prideaux (Auckland BC) returns to headline the Women’s competition. Jhanna Savov (Mount Albert), the 2023 winner, is back after missing out last year. Lesley McLinden makes her return to the field now representing Royal Oak, while a host of returning club champions are in the field once again, including Ashleigh Jeffcoat, Donna Davison, Josefina Mitchell, Linda Farley, Sue Collins, and Teresa Cowie round out a deep and competitive lineup.

Rising star Hannah Dawson (Howick) enters the event after a standout season and is widely tipped to go far. However, she faces a tough opener against Jaime Delany (Onehunga & Districts)—a reminder that no path to the final will be easy in such a stacked field.

Finals at Remuera

All matches will be played under cover, with three rounds to be completed on Saturday between Royal Oak, New Lynn and Remuera. The Men’s and Women’s semi-finals and finals are taking place at Remuera on Sunday, starting at 9:00 am. The finals are expected to begin around 11:30 am.
